New Mexico is blessed with remarkable, awe inspiring landscapes. This extraordinary place has an impressive and unique array of natural habitats, agricultural lands and scenic open spaces that are inextricably tied to the people's cultural identity, the health of ecosystems, and the economy of our state.
We are also fortunate that many people understand and appreciate the value of these lands and care enough to work to conserve them. Yet the challenge is real. In New Mexico, rapid population growth combined with a widespread desire for accelerated economic expansion have drawn people together to identify and preserve high conservation value lands. The moment to act is at hand. Over the next decade the future of so many places we love will be determined for all time.
The New Mexico Land Conservancy, a state-wide, non-profit organization, was established in 2002 to help preserve New Mexico's precious land heritage. We work to protect significant wildlife habitat, productive agricultural land and scenic open space throughout the state.
This is not to time to think small. We have set a goal of conserving 250,000 acres of high conservation value lands, directly or in partnership with others, by 2014. We seek others who share the same energetic vision to keep New Mexico the Land of Enchantment for the benefit and enjoyment of local communities, the public and future generations of New Mexicans.
All of our work at the New Mexico Land Conservancy is based on a deep respect for private property rights. As a professional, state-wide land trust organization, we adhere to established best practices to complete high quality conservation easements and other projects.
Everything we do - landowner relations, field work, stewardship, and monitoring - respects both the land and private property rights. We defend our conservation easements in perpetuity to fulfill the wishes of landowners into the future.
Additionally, we provide accurate and timely information about the techniques and benefits of private land conservation; we educate landowners, public policy makers, and the general public on the value of conserving land; we promote policy and legislation that furthers voluntary land conservation and enhanced incentives for private landowners; and we provide technical assistance and workshops.
The future viability and sustainability of the New Mexico Land Conservancy is critical to continue the work that we do as a state-wide land trust organization.
We seek people who wish to support our efforts. Won't you join us?
