Property Description:The Corrales Gateway property is located at the north entrance to the Village of Corrales, a traditional northern New Mexican community located in the Rio Grande River valley between the booming metropolitan cities of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. It is part of the 81-acre Trees of Corrales farm, which is the largest remaining farm in Corrales. The Trees of Corrales farm operates as a wholesale tree nursery that raises and sells trees, shrubs and perennials to the nursery industry throughout the Southwest. The conserved property consists of irrigated pasture and fields, and a container area with different varieties of trees and shrubs. The property borders Corrales Road (State Highway 448), which is the major north-south highway through Corrales and has been designated as a state Scenic and Historic Byway. The property affords spectacular views of the nearby Rio Grande Bosque and the dramatic mountain backdrop of the Sandia Mountains which rises to more than 10,000 feet.
This easement was purchased by the Village of Corrales through its Farmland Preservation Program with assistance from NMLC, the Corrales Farmland Preservation Committee and the Trust for Public Land, and subsequently conveyed to NMLC. The purpose of the Corrales Farmland Preservation Program is to preserve and protect the farmland, open space and viewsheds of the Village of Corrales in order to maintain its agricultural and rural character. Funding for the acquisition of the easement was provided by the Village of Corrales through funding generated from a local bond measure, and a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm and Ranchland Protection Program, administered by the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service.
