Property Description:The Zaplin property is located in Maestas Canyon along the east side of the Sangre de Cristo Range, approximately 4.5 miles west of Rociada. The easement protects 103 acres of forested land and riparian habitat along Maestas Creek. The property is comprised of mixed conifer forest, consisting primarily of Ponderosa pine and Douglas fir, interspersed with aspen and large patches of Gambel’s oak. There are several large open meadows. Elk, mule deer, turkey, black bear, mountain lion and bobcat are known to occur on the property. Maestas Creek flows through the property and contains a healthy cutthroat trout fishery. The property is bounded by Santa Fe National Forest land on two sides and the Pecos Wilderness Area on a third side.
