The Northwest region includes San Juan, McKinley and Cibola counties. This region is predominated by the Colorado Plateau, but also includes the San Juan River watershed, and the San Mateo and Zuni mountains. The San Juan basin is a major source of oil and natural gas production, but mining, agriculture and recreation are also important economic activities. Most of the landownership is comprised of Navajo Reservation and Bureau of Land Management lands with smaller areas of Cibola National Forest lands, private and State Trust lands. NMLC has protected 3090 acres in this region and looks forward to more conservation to come.
