NMLC held a celebration on September 24th, 2011 in the Mimbres Valley to honor Gene and Elisabeth Simon and the completion of their conservation easement on the River Ranch. Approximately 100 friends and neighbors attended and enjoyed food and music under the cottonwood trees.
Speakers included Scott Wilber from NMLC, John Bemis from the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, Dara Parker from Senator Jeff Bingaman’s office, and Gene Simon. Gene and Elisabeth visited with friends from the valley—and some who had traveled great distances to attend. (For pictures, see our Facebook page and our next newsletter.)
This conservation easement permanently conserves over 1,000 acres of land at the southern end of the Mimbres River valley in southwestern New Mexico, in partnership with the New Mexico State Forestry Division. Partial funding was provided for the easement through the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, and the easement will be co-held by the two organizations.
